Tables and Furniture

Tables are one of our favorites. The look is unique, but functional and allows for lots of expression and creativity. These tables can be for exterior use or interior use depending on the style. Obviously, a table is still just a table, but having a one-of-a-kind piece can be special.

The piece to the left is a wine rack with a stained top, but don't be scared of the weight. We use various methods to cast concrete and looks can be deceiving. While the top on the wine rack appears to be two and a half inches thick, it is actually only three quarters of inch thick on the top and edges. The table pictured to the right is also three quarters of inch thick on the sides and top.

One of the more frustrating aspects of making things out of concrete is the permanency of the piece. Unfortunately it is not like a lump of clay that can be remolded when experimenting to get a beautiful piece. There are some Frankenstein pieces laying around the shop as permanent monuments to "let's try that again."

Three dimensional objects and designs can be added to edges and surfaces creating unique looks for different tastes. The permanency of this type of art is a special thing for us. Even the mistake and "do over" pieces seem to have a distinct feeling once pulled from the mold. Sometimes a sacrificial casting has to be completed to "season" the form. It is basically a throw away piece. It is very difficult to destroy something because it has it's own unique energy.

Artisan concrete is the focus, but that doesn't mean that we don't love wood. There are some pieces that are entirely concrete and then there are some with a combination of wood and concrete. We love stained wood as well as painted woods. Finishes range from matte to high gloss. We have been using some fantastic and versatile paints which allow for beautiful finished looks. Lacquer paints are like catnip to us and we have been using a water-based version which looks gorgeous.
